National Strategy for the Electric Sector

AXIS 3. Robust, Reliable and Safe Electrical System

The modernization and strengthening of the national electricity system are essential to ensure the sustainability and reliability of energy supply in Mexico. This effort, led by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), is a key component of the National Electric Sector Strategy , whose main objective is to build a robust system that responds to the current and future needs of the country.

Strategic Rescue of the CFE

Had measures not been taken to rescue CFE, its share in electricity generation would have fallen to 16% by the end of 2024 , putting its operational capacity at risk. This decline would have led to an imminent disappearance of the company as a key player in the energy sector.

To reverse this situation, the CFE implemented a historic investment plan that includes:

  • 15,114 million dollars allocated to 35 generation projects with a total capacity of 13,920 MW .
  • The acquisition of 13 power plants with a combined capacity of 8,539 MW , ensuring a reliable and constant supply for millions of Mexicans.

Strategic Investment in Infrastructure

The electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure is the heart of a robust energy system. Therefore, significant resources have been allocated in the following areas:

  1. Transmission:
    • Investment of 4.6 billion dollars in 60 projects focused on substations, transmission lines and state-of-the-art equipment.
  2. Distribution:
    • Allocation of 278 million dollars to 41 projects related to substations, transformers and feeders that optimize the distribution of electricity.

Requirements by Region of the Country

The strategy also recognizes the specific needs of the different regions of the country.

  • Northern System:
    • Required investment: $3.901 billion .
    • Projected capacity: 2,375 MVA , 4,925 MVAr , and expansion of 3,445 km-c of infrastructure.
  • South System:
    • Required investment: $3.502 billion .
    • Projected capacity: 7,375 MVA , 657 MVAr , and expansion of 2,816 km-c .

Impact of the Robust Electrical System in Mexico

Strengthening the electricity infrastructure not only ensures a reliable supply, but also boosts the economy, encourages investment in renewable energy and reinforces national energy security. A robust system is essential to meet growing energy demands and reduce dependence on external sources, strengthening energy sovereignty.

Conclusion

The foundation of a robust, reliable and secure electricity system demonstrates Mexico's commitment to a sustainable energy future. The strategy of rescuing and strengthening CFE ensures that the country is prepared to face current and future energy challenges, protecting both its citizens and its economy.

At Corey Solar, we recognize the importance of these initiatives and continue to support projects that transform the national energy landscape. A stronger electrical system not only benefits industries and communities, but also creates a path to a more prosperous and sustainable Mexico.
